WA Rego Cost Calculator
Western Australia charges a flat rate per 100 kilograms of tare weight rather than stepping through bands. But it rounds your tare up to the next whole 100 kg before applying that rate, which is why a 1,505 kg car and a 1,600 kg car pay exactly the same.

How much is car registration in WA?
The licence fee is $29.76 for every 100 kg of tare weight, rounded up, plus a $9.70 recording fee and a $6.60 prescribed fee for a twelve month renewal. Motor injury insurance for a Class 1A private car adds $629.81 including GST and insurance duty.
WA has no CTP market to shop
In New South Wales and Queensland, compulsory injury insurance is sold by competing insurers and the price varies by driver. Western Australia does not work that way.
Motor injury insurance is provided through the Insurance Commission of Western Australia at a premium set by vehicle class. A Class 1A private car pays the same premium whether the driver is nineteen or sixty, and wherever in the state it is garaged.
That makes a WA registration figure genuinely predictable in a way an eastern states one is not โ the whole cost is known in advance, with nothing left to quote.
It also means the only lever on the bill is tare weight, and the only lever on tare weight is which vehicle you buy.
Rounding up makes small weight differences worthless
Because the tare rounds up before the rate applies, shaving a few kilograms off a vehicle achieves nothing unless it crosses a boundary.
A car at 1,505 kg is charged as 1,600 kg. Removing 5 kg to reach 1,500 kg saves $29.76 a year. Removing 90 kg to reach 1,415 kg saves nothing at all, because it still rounds to 1,500 kg.
The practical consequence is at the other end. If a vehicle sits just under a boundary, a permanently fitted tow bar, canopy or bull bar that raises the recorded tare past it adds $29.76 every year โ modest, but it never stops.
The calculator shows the weight it is actually charging you for, and how far the vehicle sits below the next step.
How this is calculated
A rate per 100 kg, two small fixed fees, and a compulsory insurance premium set centrally.
units = tare weight รท 100, rounded UP to the next whole unitlicence fee = units ร $29.76total = licence fee + $6.60 prescribed fee + $9.70 recording fee + motor injury insurancemotor injury insurance, Class 1A = $520.50 + 10% GST + 10% duty = $629.81
The rounding is the part worth understanding. Tare rounds up to the next whole 100 kg, or part thereof โ so 1,401 kg and 1,500 kg are both charged as 1,500 kg, and only the kilogram that crosses a boundary costs anything.
Motor injury insurance is quoted by the Insurance Commission as a base premium, with GST added and then insurance duty charged on the premium plus GST. That compounding is why the figure people actually pay is $629.81 rather than the $520.50 often quoted.
A worked example: a mid-size car
A car with a tare weight of 1,450 kg, licensed for twelve months, with Class 1A motor injury insurance.
- Tare rounded up1,500 kg (15 units)
- Licence fee, 15 ร $29.76$446.40
- Prescribed fee$6.60
- Recording fee$9.70
- Motor injury insurance$629.81
$1,092.51 for twelve months, everything included.
Motor injury insurance is more than half the bill on an ordinary car. Unlike the eastern states there is no shopping around โ the premium is set centrally by vehicle class.
What this calculator does not do
- Private cars, buses, goods vehicles and motor homes โ not trailers or special purpose vehicles
- Twelve month licence; shorter terms carry a different prescribed fee
- Class 1A motor injury insurance only โ other vehicle classes differ
- Excludes vehicle licence duty (stamp duty) payable on a purchase or transfer
- Excludes plate fees, concessions and pensioner reductions
Common questions
How much is rego in WA?
For an ordinary car around 1,450 kg tare, roughly $1,090 for twelve months with motor injury insurance included. The licence fee itself is $29.76 per 100 kg of tare, rounded up.
Is motor injury insurance included in WA rego?
Yes โ unlike NSW and Queensland, it is collected with the licence rather than bought from a separate insurer, and the premium is set by vehicle class rather than by driver.
How is tare weight rounded in WA?
Up, to the next whole 100 kg or part thereof. A 1,401 kg vehicle and a 1,500 kg vehicle are both charged as 1,500 kg.
Why is my WA rego more than my friend's?
Almost certainly tare weight. Since motor injury insurance is flat by class, weight is the only variable on an ordinary private car.
Does a heavier car cost much more to license in WA?
$29.76 a year for each additional 100 kg of tare. A 2,200 kg four-wheel drive pays around $208 a year more in licence fee than a 1,500 kg sedan.
