Dog Age Calculator Australia

The rule of one dog year equalling seven human years is a myth. Dogs age fast in their first two years and more slowly after. This calculator uses a formula from a study of how dogs' DNA changes with age to give a human-equivalent age, and describes the life stage your dog is in.

The working

A guide, not a vet's opinion. General information, not veterinary advice. Every dog ages differently, so speak to your vet about your dog's health and care.

How old is my dog in human years?

Use the formula 16 ร— ln(dog's age) + 31, from a 2020 DNA-methylation study of Labrador retrievers. A 7-year-old dog works out at about 62 in human years. A dog's first year is roughly 30 human years, the second adds about 10, and later years add fewer. Large breeds age faster, and small breeds a little slower.

Why not just multiply by seven

A one-year-old dog is mature enough to have puppies and is far closer to a teenager than a seven-year-old child. After the first two years dogs age more slowly in human terms. A curve that rises quickly and then flattens fits that better than a straight multiplier, which is why the formula uses a logarithm.

    Life stages and care

Puppies need vaccinations, socialisation and desexing advice. Adults need steady exercise, a healthy weight and yearly checks. Seniors benefit from vet checks twice a year, attention to teeth and joints, and diet changes. In most states and territories dogs must be microchipped and registered with the local council, and the rules and fees differ by place.

    How this is calculated

The rule, step by step, so you can check any figure by hand.

    • human-equivalent age = 16 ร— ln(dog's age in years) + 31
    • dog's age in years = years + months รท 12
    • life stage is set by age and size: puppy under 1 year, adult to the senior age for the size, then senior
    • senior age is about 10 for small dogs, 8 for medium, 7 for large and 6 for giant breeds
    • typical lifespan is about 14 for small, 12 for medium, 10 for large and 8 for giant

The formula comes from researchers who compared the changing chemistry of DNA in dogs and in people. It is far better than seven-to-one, but it was fitted to one breed, the Labrador retriever, so treat it as a guide for other breeds. Very young puppies fall outside the range where it works, so under six months the tool does not give a figure.

Size matters in practice: large and giant dogs age faster and have shorter lives than small ones, so the senior age and typical lifespan here depend on the size you choose. The numbers are averages and individual dogs vary a lot.

    A worked example

A medium dog aged 7 years.

    1. Human-equivalent ageabout 62
    2. Life stageAdult, nearing senior
    3. Senior from about8 years
    4. Typical lifespan (medium)about 12 years

    About 62 in human years.

Bigger dogs reach senior age sooner.

    Breed differences

Giant breeds such as Great Danes may live only 7 to 8 years, while small dogs such as chihuahuas often reach 14 to 16. Your vet knows your dog's breed and can tell you what to expect.

    What it leaves out

Individual health, diet and breed are not modelled beyond size. The result is a talking point, not a medical measurement.

What this calculator does not do

    • Formula fitted to Labradors
    • Averages by size
    • Not for puppies under 6 months
    • Not veterinary advice

    Common questions

How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years?

About 62, by the research formula.

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No. It is a rough myth.

When is a dog a senior?

From about 6 to 10 years, depending on its size.

    Do big dogs age faster?

Yes. They have shorter lives on average.

    Where can I get advice?

    From your vet.
