Voice Recorder Online

Sometimes you just need to record something: a voice memo, an interview, a practice talk. This recorder uses your microphone through the browser, keeps the recording on your device and gives you a download when you stop. Built for New Zealand users, with nothing sent to a server.

How do I record my voice online?

Press Record, allow microphone access when your browser asks, speak, then press Stop. You can play the recording back and download it. The audio is captured by your browser and held in memory, so nothing is uploaded, and the file format depends on the browser: usually WebM or M4A.

    Getting a good recording

Sit close to the microphone in a quiet room, away from hard surfaces that echo, and avoid fans and air conditioning. A headset microphone or a phone's earbuds beat a laptop's built-in microphone. Do a ten-second test and play it back before you start something long.

Keep the tab open while recording: closing it or letting the computer sleep stops the recording.

    Privacy and consent

The recording stays on your device. If you record other people, you need to be aware of the law on recording conversations, which differs by state and territory in Australia and under the Privacy Act 2020 and other rules in New Zealand. In general, tell people you are recording and get their agreement.

To convert the recording to WAV, use the MP3 to WAV converter.

    How this is calculated

The rule, step by step, so you can check any figure by hand.

    • the browser asks for permission to use the microphone
    • the media recorder captures the audio into chunks in memory
    • on Stop the chunks are joined into one file you can play and download
    • size โ‰ˆ bitrate ร— seconds รท 8, about 0.5 to 1 MB a minute

The tool is deliberately simple: the browser does the encoding, so the format and quality depend on it. Chrome and Firefox produce WebM with the Opus codec, which is efficient and clear for speech, while Safari produces M4A. Both play in most apps, and the audio is typically 0.5 to 1 MB a minute.

Echo and noise reduction are browser features that help on laptops with speakers, but they can slightly colour the sound, so turn them off for music.

    Formats

WebM and M4A are fine for most uses. If you need MP3 or WAV for editing, convert the file with the MP3 to WAV tool or desktop software.

    What it leaves out

No trimming, volume control or noise removal beyond the browser's own. Very long recordings use memory, so save long sessions in parts.

What this calculator does not do

    • Format and quality set by the browser
    • No editing
    • Needs microphone permission
    • Recording is lost if the tab is closed

    Common questions

    Is my recording uploaded?

No. It is kept in your browser and offered for download when you stop.

    What format is the recording?

WebM in most browsers or M4A in Safari.

Why is the microphone not working?

Check the browser's permission for this site and that another app is not using the microphone.

Can I record my computer's sound?

Not with this tool. It records the microphone only.

Is it legal to record someone?

It depends on the state or territory and the circumstances. Tell people you are recording and get their consent.
