The working
How do I split a bill between friends?
Add any surcharge and tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $186.00 bill for 4 people is $46.50 each. With a 10% tip it is $51.15 each. Tipping is not expected in New Zealand, and service is included in the menu price.
Fair ways to split
An even split is simplest, but it is not fair if some people skipped drinks or ordered much less. Alternatives are to pay for your own items, to split shared dishes evenly and pay individually for the rest, or to let the people who drank more cover the drinks. A quick chat before ordering avoids awkwardness at the end.
Tips and surcharges
Some New Zealand venues add a surcharge of 15% on public holidays, as the law requires staff to be paid time and a half, and some add a card payment fee. Enter any percentage shown on your bill. Check whether the surcharge already covers staff costs before adding a tip. A tip is a gift for good service, not a requirement.
To work out a percentage on its own, use the percentage calculator.
How this is calculated
The rule, step by step, so you can check any figure by hand.
surcharge = bill ร surcharge %, tip = bill ร tip %total = bill + surcharge + tipshare = total รท number of peoplerounded share = share rounded up to the step you chooseleft over = rounded shares ร people โ total
Some New Zealand venues add a surcharge of 15% on public holidays, as the law requires staff to be paid time and a half, and some add a card payment fee. Enter any percentage shown on your bill. Tips are normally worked out on the bill before the surcharge, which is how this calculator treats them.
Splitting evenly is fair when everyone ate and drank about the same. If it was not even, ask the group to pay for what they had and split the shared items, such as entrees, evenly. Rounding each share up leaves a little extra, which can go to the tip or cover someone short.
A worked example
A $186.00 bill, 4 people, 10% tip, 10% public holiday surcharge.
- Surcharge$18.60
- Tip$18.60
- Total$223.20
- Each person$55.80
- Rounded up to the dollar$56.00
$55.80 each.
Round up to the nearest dollar for a tidy payment.
Paying
Many venues will split a bill across several cards, but ask before you order, since some limit how many cards they take. Or pay one person and transfer money to them by bank transfer straight away.
What it leaves out
Uneven orders, discounts and vouchers are not modelled. Subtract a discount from the bill before entering it.
What this calculator does not do
- Even split only
- Tip on the bill before surcharge
- No itemised orders
- General information
