Overtime Calculator New Zealand

New Zealand law does not set an overtime rate. What you are paid for extra hours comes from your employment agreement, so the multipliers here are yours to set. Enter your hourly rate, your ordinary hours and the overtime hours at each rate to see the total pay for the week.

    Employment New Zealand

Check your agreement. Your employment agreement decides your overtime rates. This tool uses the multipliers you set, and figures are gross pay before tax.

How is overtime pay calculated in New Zealand?

Multiply your hourly rate by the overtime multiplier in your agreement and by the hours worked, then add ordinary pay. At $32.00 an hour, 40 ordinary hours, 4 hours at time and a half and 2 at double time, the week pays $1,600.00. The law sets no overtime rate, but it does require time and a half for working a public holiday.

    What the law says

The law sets minimum wage, public holiday pay, leave and rest breaks, but not overtime. A salaried employee may be expected to work reasonable extra hours without more pay if the agreement says so and the salary is high enough that the effective rate stays above the minimum wage. Check your employment agreement for ordinary hours and how extra hours are paid.

If you are paid hourly, check that extra hours are paid at least your normal rate.

    Public holidays and casual work

A public holiday that falls on a day you would normally work is paid at time and a half if you work it, plus an alternative holiday. If you do not work it, you are paid your normal day's pay. Casual workers on irregular hours can have 8% holiday pay added to their pay each week or period.

Use the public holiday pay calculator for the detail on a single day.

    How this is calculated

The rule, step by step, so you can check any figure by hand.

    • ordinary pay = rate ร— ordinary hours
    • overtime = rate ร— multiplier ร— hours, for each band
    • public holiday work = rate ร— 1.5 ร— hours (legal minimum)
    • holiday pay on top for casual or irregular work = 8% of gross pay
    • effective rate = total pay รท total hours

There is no legal minimum overtime rate in New Zealand, so the multipliers come from your employment agreement or your employer's policy. Many agreements pay time and a half for the first few hours and double time after, but yours may differ, or pay a flat rate or none at all for salaried staff.

Working a public holiday that would otherwise be a working day for you must be paid at least time and a half, and you may also get an alternative holiday. Casual workers with irregular hours can have 8% holiday pay added to each pay instead of getting annual leave.

    A worked example

    $32.00 an hour, 40 ordinary hours, 4 hours at 1.5 and 2 at 2.

    1. Ordinary pay$1,280.00
    2. 4 hours at 1.5$192.00
    3. 2 hours at 2$128.00
    4. Total for the week$1,600.00
    5. Effective hourly rate$34.78

    $1,600.00 for the week.

Add 8% holiday pay only if your agreement pays it on top.

    Checking your payslip

Your payslip should show ordinary hours, overtime hours and each rate. If something looks wrong, raise it with your employer first, then with Employment New Zealand, whose helpline and mediation service are free.

    What it leaves out

Tax, KiwiSaver, penal rates under particular agreements and time-off-in-lieu arrangements are not modelled.
